PYC Therapeutics is a drug development company engaged in progressing oligonucleotide-based therapies to treat a range of inherited diseases, focusing initially on blinding eye diseases.  The Chief Research Officer will form a critical part of PYC Therapeutics’ executive team, leading the organization's research efforts and ensuring discovery work is efficiently and effectively transitioned to drug development. The position includes liaising closely with our Chief Scientific Officer (based in Australia)  and Chief Development Officer (based in US).  The Australian research operations group would report into this position which can be located anywhere in the US.  Candidates should have PhD or MD/PhD in the Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine or equivalent and 10+ years of biotech/pharma experience. Capabilities include:

  • Hold deep command of efforts that include in vitro and in vivo outcomes from the conceptual level through to proof of concept either via efficacy or PD models in vivo.
  • Interface with laboratory bench efforts and early-stage CMC to educate efforts through appropriate in vitro and in vivo assays so that CMC improvements can run ahead.
  • Provide leadership around the design, execution, interpretation, and reporting of all contributing functional disciplines along with the functional leaders.
  • Interface with CMC to inform CMC efforts and optimization through appropriate assay-based feedback.
  • Provide adequate expertise and support for bioanalytical assay design and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team of research scientists both internal and outsourced to successful outcomes


  • Requires a PhD or MD/PhD in the Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicine or equivalent.
  • Must have 10+ years of biotech/pharma experience, having worked on programs with the purpose of moving them toward drug development, including creating and setting the research strategy, creating the appropriate roadmaps and decision trees, and planning and managing the execution of programs from conception through the research funnel from generating and evaluating hits, appropriate characterization, and lead selection. The evaluation efforts will lead to a hand-off into nonclinical development.
  • Must have a deep understanding of the ‘how to’ for the execution of in vitro and in vivo evaluations of research candidates, that include pharmacodynamic and disease models, as well as any related evaluations necessary for choosing and triaging research candidates to make choices for advancement into candidate nomination for nonclinical development.
  • Ability to create appropriate selection criteria to assist and drive lead selection, and then select lead and back-up molecules if needed, by considering and executing best approaches including but not limited to:
    • In vivo PD and/or efficacy evaluations,
    • Duration of effect and high-level distribution-effect-time curves, if and as appropriate,
    • Tolerability and other on- and off-target evaluations, if and as appropriate,
    • Narrow down, through in vitro and in vivo efforts including efficacy, tolerability and potential early PK-biodistribution, and other screening toward a lead candidate.
  • Ability to conduct extensive lead candidate characterization that will be foundational for non-clinical development.
  • Must understand and know how to strategize and plan programs incorporating all the modern tools involved in research to optimize choices of drug candidates and provide data packages that can support their candidacy for internal use, and for scrutiny by external partners and for diligence purposes.
  • Experiences in ophthalmology drug discovery research are a plus.
  • Experiences in drug discovery in multiple therapeutic areas, preferably in the kidney and/or CNS in addition to the eye, are a plus.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and analytical skills, as well as high ethical standards and outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for identifying, setting, and meeting critical deliverables, delivering lead candidates with adequate characterization as well as back up candidates with fully vetted data packages that meet industry standards
  • Must have the ability to interface and work with nonclinical development teams to provide guidance and support in the program advancement
  • Requires proven experience with developing efficient discovery processes and directing complex cross-functional team collaborations.
  • Must have a proven track record of advancing programs from discovery through to lead candidate selection and potential beyond that stage
  • Requires the ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Must be team oriented and able to invest in the success of others.
