*Job Summary*
The Ophthalmology Scribe-Technician is responsible for providing the highest quality ophthalmic patient care possible. The Ophthalmic Scribe-Technician accurately scribes for all requested providers. The Ophthalmic Scribe-Technician performs patient histories, completes requested ophthalmic testing and consistently provides superior customer service for the patients. The Ophthalmic Scribe-Technician ensures the proper utilization of time and movement of the patient throughout the patient visit.
*Minimum Qualifications*
High school diploma or GED required
Bachelor Degree or Associate Degree in a related field highly preferred
Two years of ophthalmology experience preferred
Requires JCAHPO COA Certification within 12 months of employment
Require OSC (Ophthalmic Scribe Certification) within 6 months of employment, or after obtaining COA.
*Duties*
Consistently performs proper documentation of case history, confrontation visual fields, pupil evaluation, screening extra-ocular muscle function, visual acuity, instillation of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, amsler grid and other functions as directed by the clinical physician.
Performs auto refractions and/or refractions according to practice protocols in a timely and efficient manner.
Must be able to operate electronic medical record software in a timely and efficient manner.
Ensures all charges for the patient’s visit are recorded properly.
Obtains eyeglass prescriptions via performing manual lensometry.
Performs patient diagnostic testing accurately and effectively as directed by the clinical provider(s) i.e. Slit Lamp Exam, Visual Fields, Color Test, Stereo Testing, Tonometry (Goldman Applanation, Tonopen), Corneal Topography, Manual Keratometry, OCT’s, Specular Microscopy, Fundus Photos, Slit Lamp Photos, Pachymetry, Fluorescein/ICG Angiography, A-scan, B-Scan, Optical Biometry, etc.
Must participate in assisting in all aspects of Clinical Trial Studies.
Correctly summarizes and documents what the physician verbalizes during an examination, including but not limited to: proper charting of the examination, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment and recommendations for treatment (including justification of decisions reached when appropriate). Ensures that all charted exams abide by Medicare/MIPS guidelines for proper coding.
Knows required components of examination for appropriate CPT coding to ensure all elements are accurately completed.
Understands Medicare and other common insurance requirements for quality reporting in order to help practice compliance with payer requirements.
Observes the patient and the physician and assists when appropriate during the exam, including but not limited to: holding the patient’s head in the slit lamp or laser, providing additional medications and/or instruments, following directions in a medical emergency.
Must be able to prepare, set-up and assist with minor surgery office procedures as needed
Maintains an awareness of the patient’s verbal and non-verbal communication (including Cyracom) when the physician is providing instructions as it may be necessary for the scribe to repeat information, provide written instructions, and/or hand out patient education materials for the patient to review at home.
Ensures patient understands all instructions, and all questions have been answered.
Accurately documents chart errors according to practice protocol.
Ensure all proper consents are completed for all procedures and initiate the surgical package/intake process.
Learns the personality and preferences of each physician, recognizing differences and abiding by them when working with physician.
Becomes fluent in the exact requirements of each examination.
Helps coordinate the patient flow by seating patients into empty exam rooms and directs Physician to next patient (I.e. exam room, FA, etc.).
Breaks down and preps the room for the next patient- cleaning equipment in front of the patient for the physician’s use (I.e. Slit Lamp).
Pulls proper injection and maintains injection inventory for Physician and preps Patient’s eye with Proparacaine prior to Physician entering exam room.
Remains as close to the physician as possible during the assigned clinic session, and limits time away from the physician and the patient as documentation may be missed.
When applicable, prepares accurate eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions and/or medication prescriptions for the physician’s signature prior to the completion of the examination.
Alerts physician to patient-related forms that need completion and assists in form completion
When appropriate, and as directed by the physician, completes coding with correct modifiers.
Must keep track of inventory and notify management when in need of supplies – i.e. drugs, drop samples, tissue, hand sanitizer, purified water, etc.
Must assist physician with pre/intraoperative data review, postoperative documentation, coding, and coding submission as directed by the physician Documents and informs the front desk personnel and physician of patient flow delays
Responsible for pharmacy calls, patient calls and surgery post-op calls, etc. in a timely manner.
Ensures all patient lanes are clean and well-stocked and instruments are properly sterilized as needed at the end of each day as required.
Ensures all equipment is turned off and covered properly at the end of day as required.
Processes e-scripts and prior authorizations as requested in a timely manner.
Maintains and tracks patient and internal communications for the assigned physician.
Completes all meaningful use requirements for the practice.
Follows all documentation protocols for the practice.
Maintains proper work-up standards of productivity as defined by physician requirements, patient diagnosis and as defined by management.

Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
