Description

The McPherson laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences seek a qualified individual for an RO1 supported post-doctoral or research associate position.

About the laboratory and the job

The McPherson laboratory is in the Lions Research Building on the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis Campus. The lab uses the murine eye, particularly the retina, as a model system to study the regulation of immune responses. In addition, the lab also studies the role of zinc in the pathogenesis and prevention of age-related macular degeneration, and the ocular imaging of zinc as a biomarker for age-related macular degeneration. Most experiments are longitudinal in nature and involve multiple live, in-vivo procedures followed by tissue isolation, preparation, and then ex-vivo analysis. The position is supported by the National Institutes of Health grant RO1 EY033328-01.

Requirements

Required qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a biological science field or B.S./B.A. with appropriate experience.
  • 3 or more years of research experience.
  • 1 or more years of training and experience in flow cytometry and flow cytometry data analysis. Ability to use FACS-DIVA and FlowJo software.
  • Ability to perform qualitative and quantitative PCR and RT-PCR (qPCR and qRT-PCR) including tissue procurement and nucleic acid isolation.
  • Experience with mouse genetics including development, breeding, and husbandry of strains with multiple transgenes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with murine (mouse) ocular surgical techniques including optic nerve crush, anterior and posterior chamber injection, and intravitreal injections.
  • Ability to perform live, in-vivo retinal imaging by fundoscopy and optical coherence tomography.
  • Experience doing conventional and confocal fluorescence microscopy.
  • Experience with review of experimental design, data analysis, and preparation and editing of manuscripts and other scientific presentations.

Responsibilities

The position will be in support of our studies on local control and regulation of retinal autoimmunity. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintenance and genetic analysis of mouse colony including record keeping required by internal and external regulatory bodies such as IACUC.
  • General maintenance and record keeping for the laboratory in accordance with requirements set by internal and external regulatory bodies.
  • Ex-vivo experiments. This includes tissue preparation, performing, and analysis of PCR, flow cytometry, and fluorescence microscopy experiments.
  • In-vivo experiments. This includes surgeries and in-vivo imaging protocols.
  • Contributing to experimental design and review, data analysis, and the preparation, editing, and review of laboratory manuscripts and other scientific presentations.
