Company Profile

Company Overview

The Boston Foundation for Sight has restored the sight and helped reclaim the lives of over 1,500 people who had been given no hope of ever seeing again or being free of their unrelenting eye pain and photophobia. People who are functionally blind due to injuries and diseases of their corneas, or who are afflicted with severe ocular surface diseases including those caused by cancer or cancer treatments, come from all over the world to the Foundation. At our clinic near Boston, patients are fitted (free of charge for any unable to pay) with our unique Boston Ocular Surface Prosthesis, which fits over the cornea and bathes it in a protective fluid while masking imperfections. The product of over fifteen years of research, it combines the elements of advanced polymer chemistry, digital lens design, and state-of-the-art computerized manufacturing technology. The Boston Ocular Surface Prosthesis received FDA approval in 1994 and currently has a success rate well in excess of 90% of patients fitted.

Company History

The Boston Ocular Surface Prosthesis (formerly known as the Boston Scleral Lens) grew out of the pioneering work of our founder and president, Dr. Perry Rosenthal, who also founded the Contact Lens Clinic at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary more than 40 years ago. Currently assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Rosenthal has dedicated his entire career to expanding the therapeutic application of rigid contact lenses to restore vision in people who have become blind from corneal disease. To this end, he established the non-profit Boston Foundation for Sight in 1992. In 1993 the Foundation applied for and received 501(c) (3) non-profit status to make its unique, vision-restoring prosthetic device more widely available to all patients who can benefit from its use, regardless of their financial circumstances or where they live.
